Abortion Tips & Helpful Facts
Abortion Pill

A prescription for Tylenol #3 is provided. This is followed by over-the-counter  Motrin/Advil/Aleve/ibuprophen on-the-clock every 3 hours.

Updated Abortion Procedure

Did you know that the Updated Traditional Abortion allows a woman to take 4 tablets of misoprostol by mouth for a single-day abortion service instead of vaginal laminaria sponge sticks overnight in a 2-day procedure? Both of these methods soften and dilate the cervix. The difference is the added comfort, safety and convenience of taking tablets by mouth for a one-day procedure instead of the laminaria that absorb moisture from the body and expand for several hours overnight.

Traditional Abortion Made Simple
  1. Did you know that a sonogram is the most reliable method of assessing how far along you are into your pregnancy? It uses sound waves to see your pelvic structures. It is not an X-ray and there is no radiation.

  2. Physicians determine the length of pregnancy based on our last menstrual period and not on the actual date of conception. Therefore, if you think you conceived 8 weeks ago, you last menstrual period was probably 10 weeks ago, and you would be considered 10 weeks pregnant. Any abortion performed up to 12 weeks of pregnancy is, by definition, a first trimester procedure. If your ultrasound evaluation reveals that you are over 12 weeks of pregnancy, the procedure is a second trimester procedure. At DrEmily, we perform abortion to the legal limit in New York, which is 24 weeks.

  3. If your blood is found to be Rh negative (for example: type A negative, O negative), you will need an injection of Rhogam following the abortion. Rhogam prevents antibodies from being formed in your blood that would cause problems with future pregnancies. If you are Rh negative, it is important that you receive a Rhogam injection with every pregnancy.

  4. At DrEmily's, we perform abortion procedures only for a woman who wishes the procedure, regardless of age, or the requests of her partner, parents or pals. The patient educator will obtain the patient's written consent for an abortion. In NY State, a woman is permitted to have an abortion no matter what her age. Parental consent is not required, and there is no waiting period.

  5. First trimester abortions are one of the safest surgical procedures and are approximately 9-10 time safer than normal childbirth. Potentially, both minor and major complications are possible, but most are minor and easily treated. Possible complications include: infection (less than 1%), heavy bleeding (1/2 of 1%), incomplete abortion (less than 1%), damage to the uterus or nearby internal structures (less than 1/2 of 1%), cervical tear (1/2 of 1%), continuing pregnancy (less than 1%), death (1 in 160,000).

  6. The cramping and bleeding which patients experience following an abortion is due t0 the uterus returning to its normal size after the pregnancy is removed. The best medication to use for the cramping is Motrin/Advil/Aleve/ibuprophen, not Tylenol. Take the medication on the clock every 3-4 hours, to manage the discomfort and cut down on the bleeding.

  7. At DrEmily's, we provide free samples of birth control for our patients.

  8. Patients may choose local anesthesia, that is: an injection of pain-stopping medication into the cervix. The cervix is numb, but the patient is awake. Patients experience moderate cramping during the procedure.
